Grants for Survivor & Advocate Business Owners or Creators - October 2026
Share
OCTOBER 2026
Advocates and survivors are building businesses.
Consultants. Trainers. Curriculum developers. Mentors and coaches. Doulas. Photographers and writers. People who spent years working a hotline, running a shelter program, providing training, building coalitions, or doing policy analysis and are now building something of their own, on their own terms, with expertise refined in the field helping families, believing women, and changing lives for the better.
That's who this list is for.
Capital is one of the hardest parts of that build, and the search for it eats time you would rather spend on the work. So this page collects what is actually open — organized by how you would use it, with the eligibility rules stated plainly enough that you can rule things out in seconds instead of an evening.
October is a good month for the creatives among you. The Amber Grant's October category is Creative Arts, and several of this month's openings are built for writers, makers, and journalists.
This list is one piece of a bigger commitment
Grant money for a business is real, and it is also small. The organizations and advocates building something durable are building revenue they control — fee-for-service, social enterprise, an LLC alongside the mission.
That's what the Sustained At Last newsletter is about. And a new verified funding list goes out with it at the start of every month.
How this list is made
Every opportunity here was opened on the funder's own website and confirmed before it was listed. This month, every claim also went through a second check that tried to prove it wrong.
Funding information moves quickly. Programs change their cadence, loosen a rule, or close a cycle without much announcement, so any list — including this one — starts aging the moment it is written. Checking the source is the only thing that fixes that, and it is the one part of this you should not have to do yourself every time.
Anything that could not be confirmed was left off, or flagged so you know to check before you spend time on it.
What changed this month
Galaxy Grant is now $2,500. Last month's list showed $4,250, which was the amount of an earlier round. The current round, closing October 31, is $2,500. Still free to apply.
Amber Grant's October category is Creative Arts. Photographers, writers, graphic designers, performers, filmmakers, jewelry makers, and people who teach art classes all fit. One application is also considered for the monthly grant and the year-end grants.
Tory Burch Foundation Fellows opened its 2027 cycle on September 22. It closes November 17. Details are under Next month.
The Women's Independence Scholarship Program runs in two windows, not year-round. Last month we listed it as rolling. The fall window closed October 1, and the next one opens January 1. That's a correction to our September list.
Secretsos opened its fourth-quarter round. It runs October 1 through December 31.
The Alicia Patterson Fellowship deadline passed on October 1. The fellowship now runs through the Fund for Investigative Journalism, whose next deadline is January 29.
Closing this month
Southern Prize for Literature — $25,000 unrestricted · $25 · closes October 7 · South Arts
Full-time residents of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee, 18 or older, and not enrolled in a degree program. Book-length works in progress are welcome, so you do not need a published book.
The reason to look at this one: the winner receives $25,000 unrestricted, and two runners-up receive $10,000 each, with a residency for all three. Unrestricted money for a writer is rare.
This one closes this week.

McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism — up to $15,000 · no fee listed · closes October 12 · Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Business Journalism at the CUNY Newmark Graduate School of Journalism
Freelance and staff journalists in any medium with at least five years of professional experience. You need a story idea with an economic or business angle. Freelancers can use the grant as a living stipend while reporting.
The reason to prioritize this one: the economics of our field — how families rebuild financially, what economic abuse costs, how survivors build wealth — is business journalism. If you write, report, or produce audio, your expertise is the angle.

LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize 2027 — €50,000 · FREE · closes October 15 at 11:59pm Central European Time · LOEWE FOUNDATION
Professional artisans 18 or older, of any nationality. The piece must be original, handmade in whole or in part, one of a kind, and made within the last five years.
The reason to look at this one: it is free to enter, it is open internationally, and the prize is large. If you make by hand — ceramics, textiles, jewelry, woodwork, glass — this is worth an evening.
Note the European close. 11:59 pm in Central Europe is late afternoon or early evening Eastern, so submit during the day on October 15.
Hey Helen Grant — $10,000 unrestricted · $15 · closes October 31 · Visionaries
Women owning at least 50% of the business. Under $1M in annual revenue, and pre-revenue businesses are welcome. Nonprofits are not eligible.
The reason to prioritize this one: your application stays on file for twelve months, so a single $15 fee puts your business in front of the panel in every monthly round for a year.
September's round closed at 7:00 pm ET rather than midnight. Check the closing time on the page before you plan a late-night submission.

Amber Grant — October: Creative Arts — three $10,000 grants every month · $15 · closes October 31, 11:59 pm ET · WomensNet
Women 18 or older, with a business at least 50% women-owned, based in the United States or Canada. Idea-stage businesses qualify.
The reason to prioritize this one this month: October's category grant is for creative businesses — photographers, writers, designers, performers, filmmakers, makers, and art teachers. One application is considered for the monthly grants, the category grant, and three separate $50,000 year-end grants.
The $15 fee can be waived if it is a hardship. Email info@ambergrantsforwomen.com and ask.

Businesses at least 51% women-owned, registered in the United States, with under $1M in gross revenue. Franchises, direct sellers, and resellers are not eligible.
The reason to look at this one: it was built for under-resourced women of color, and it awards every month.

The Open Notebook Early-Career Fellowship — $6,600 stipend · FREE · closes October 31, 11:59 pm Central · The Open Notebook
Early-career science writers with fewer than three years of regular professional science writing. Applicants from any country are welcome. The fellowship is part-time and remote for twelve months, and fellows write four articles.
The reason to look at this one: if your writing is moving toward health, trauma research, or the science of recovery, this is paid mentorship into that work.

Before you spend anything
Application fees are common here, usually $15 to $25. Applying to every fee-charging opportunity on this page would run well over $100.
Start with the free ones. This month that means Galaxy, LOEWE, The Open Notebook, and Verizon Digital Ready.
A useful rule: government grants never charge a fee. Private competitions sometimes charge a modest one, and that is normal — but a fee should be small, disclosed up front, and never a condition of releasing money you have supposedly already won.
And when a funder publishes very little about who decides, how, or who has won before, that is worth factoring into whether the fee is worth paying.
The honest gap
There is no open, national grant fund in the United States built specifically for for-profit businesses owned by survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault.
That was checked again this month, from several angles. What exists is personal financial assistance, education scholarships, regional referral programs, or money restricted to nonprofits.
Saying that plainly is more useful than padding a list with things that will not work for you. It is also a large part of why the Dawson Foundation for Survivor-Centered Impact is being built.
How to check anything yourself
This page is rechecked every month, and you should still never have to take anyone's word for it — mine included. The method takes about ten seconds.
Go to the funder's own website and read the program page there.
Look for a date. A current cycle, a current deadline, a current year. If the newest thing on the page is two years old, the program probably is not running.
Read the eligibility page before you write anything. Most wasted application hours belong to people who were never eligible.
If you cannot confirm it is open, treat it as closed until you can.
Ten seconds now saves an evening later.
Your expertise has a home: the Survivor-Centered Expert Services Network
Grants are one way to fund your business. Being found and booked for your expertise is another.
The Survivor-Centered Expert Services Network lives on the Advocates Paying Advocates Marketplace. It brings together advocates, survivor-leaders, and consultants offering the advisory and strategic services our field asks for most — board governance, grant application review, culturally specific strategy, fundraising, data analysis, workplace culture, and more.
If you are an expert, you get a professional profile with your photo, rates, intro video, and a direct booking button. Clients book and pay you directly, and you keep 100% of what you earn — no commission. The listing is $99 a year, charged only after your application is approved, and that rate holds through December 31, 2026. A listing gives you visibility; it does not guarantee inquiries.
If your organization needs expert support: browse the network or tell us what you need.

If you apply to something on this page, I want to hear about it. And if you know of an opportunity that belongs here, send it — it will get verified and added.
A note on accuracy. Deadlines and eligibility rules change without notice. Everything on this page was confirmed on October 4, 2026, and you should still confirm eligibility on the funder's own site before applying — including everything stated here.
